<image:caption>When we think about having electricity we think of a switch that is either on or off. This usually relates to a connection to a reliable national grid. Across the world this is not always the case, and electricity access may rather be described as an endless number of combinations matching available technology with the specific needs of the consumer.</image:caption>

When they see bubbles coming from the surface, they throw the cone down into the mud and with their hand catch the fish inside of it. Fewer than half of Odisha’s 42 million residents use grid electricity. On July 18, 2013, the Detroit officially entered Chapter 9 bankruptcy, leading to population decline. This decline challenges the communities to provide basic municipal services. Detroit has well above average utility rates and suffers frequent blackouts in low income communities. Betty and her family live in an area that is largely abandoned and has experienced inflated utility rates. Being a recent recipient of solar panels from local non-profit NEWCC and the Honnold Foundation has alleviated both heavy electric bills and economic stress.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Theatre Lights is a story about frugal innovation. My experience as an amateur photographer was parlayed into my mission to empower energy poor off-grid communities. In 2019 I modified a photography soft box lamp holder into a solar powered theatre light for an off-grid Primary Healthcare Center (PHC). The lights run on low voltage Direct Current (DC) and do not require the extra expense of an inverter to work. Without funds to fuel a generator and previously depending on hand held lamps to run the clinic, solar power delivered much needed relief. Young women from this off-grid community were invited to learn the basics of solar power. The picture captures the moment when the switch was turned on for the theatre lights</image:caption>
